Link Aliasing

Link Aliasing is a way to create a custom, unique URL for a page. This is similiar to URLRewrite.

When enabled, you can create custom links for any page, or by default, the page's name will be used.

Link Aliasing is similiar to Link Forwarding. Link Aliasing assigns an alternate name to the URL. Link Forwarding causes the visitor to jump to a different page. Typically, Link Aliases are permanent. Link Forwards, on the other hand, can be easily changed. Also, Search engine robot will not index Link Forwards URLs. They will remember Link Alias links.

When configured, all site menuing will use the Link Alias instead of the default ?bid=1 method.

Settings

To enable Link Aliasing, check the 'Allow Link Aliasing' checkbox in Site Preferences. To find Site Preferences, go to the admin site, and open the navigator on the left. Open settings, and Preferences, and go to the Site tab.

Make sure your site has it's '404 custom error' setting on IIS set to the default page (index.asp for instance). You can check this by entering an incorrect page name in the address bar. If you receive the standard browser 'page not found' message, IIS custom errors need to be configured.

Example

For example, if your page named "About Us" has the url, "http://mysite.com/index.php?bid=1203", turning on link alias will automatically make the link http://mysite.com/About-Us. If instead you want it to be http://mysite.com/My-Company, simply add "My Company" to the Link Alias field and save,
